Boho Home Styles: Where Soulful Style Meets Everyday Magic
One afternoon, in the middle of a busy week of laundry piles and work deadlines, I stumbled across a photo online that stopped me in my tracks. It was a softly lit living room—textured rugs layered beneath a vintage coffee table, a velvet chair that didn’t match anything else, and a dozen plants trailing happily from handmade shelves. There was no obvious color palette. No symmetry. But it worked. It sang.
I clicked through more photos and discovered a home that felt like a storybook—beautiful, a little wild, and unapologetically personal. I didn’t know the owners, but I could feel their presence in every corner. That moment reminded me why I love sharing home styles on this blog—not because I live in them all, but because I find pieces of us in the homes of others.
Today, I’d love to take you on a tour of one such home. I’ll guide you through each space, room by room, and show you what Boho style really feels like when it’s done with heart.
What Is Boho Homestyle?
Boho—or Bohemian—design is a celebration of freedom, warmth, and collected beauty. It doesn’t follow strict rules. Instead, it’s all about layering pieces that hold meaning, textures that invite touch, and objects that reflect stories. The style blends elements from many cultures and design eras, creating a lived-in, soulful look.
Common Features of Boho Homes:
-
Natural materials: rattan, cane, jute, wood, clay, and cotton
-
Earthy, sun-washed, or bold jewel tones
-
Global influences: Moroccan rugs, Indian textiles, African baskets
-
Handmade and vintage objects: from ceramics to macramé wall art
-
An abundance of greenery—plants are considered decor!
Boho homes feel inviting and deeply personal—like stepping into someone’s creative heart.
Exterior – A Warm Welcome Before the Door Opens
The house we’re visiting today is nestled in a quiet neighborhood in Austin, Texas. The first thing you notice is the crisp white stucco facade, softened by a climbing vine that hugs the front wall. The front door is hand-painted in a sun-washed ochre tone, chipped at the edges in the most charming way.
A narrow porch stretches across the front, with rattan chairs, soft pillows in faded stripes, and a woven rug underfoot. Lanterns hang beside the doorway, and wind chimes tinkle gently in the breeze. There’s no perfect symmetry—but everything feels perfectly placed.
From the outside, this home already invites you to slow down.
Living Room – A Story in Every Corner
Step inside, and you’re immediately wrapped in calm. The vaulted ceiling above is lined with exposed wooden beams. The floors are warm oak, scuffed and glowing in the natural light. A large Persian rug anchors the space, its colors softened by time and sunlight.
There’s a large, low couch—neutral in color, but covered in an eclectic mix of pillows: velvet, mud cloth, embroidered cotton. The coffee table is a reclaimed wood slab, uneven and heavy with history. On it sits a stack of worn books, a ceramic bowl of crystals, and a vintage candle holder.
A macramé wall hanging fills one wall with quiet movement, while the other hosts a gallery of unframed art and mirrors in various shapes. The entire room breathes. It feels peaceful, layered, and never overdone.
Kitchen – Functional, Flexible, and Full of Charm
The kitchen flows naturally from the living space, with open shelving displaying hand-thrown bowls, glass jars of herbs, and woven baskets filled with lemons. A large island sits in the center, topped with a chunky wood slab that holds everything from a fruit bowl to little clay pots the children made.
Cabinets are mismatched: some painted a soft moss green, others left in raw pine. The backsplash is a mix of tiles—some patterned, some plain, some imperfect—and it brings so much personality to the space.
Over the sink, a window looks out into the backyard garden, and a trailing plant hangs nearby. The scent of dried lavender lingers in the air. This kitchen isn’t for showing off. It’s for making memories—of pies baked on Sundays, and tea shared at midnight.
Bedroom – A Soft Retreat of Texture and Light
The bedroom here is all about comfort and softness. The bed is layered with natural linen sheets, tasseled throws, and a mix of pillows collected from travels and thrift shops alike. A gauzy canopy falls gently from the ceiling, framing the bed like a cocoon.
Next to the bed, a low wooden stool holds a ceramic lamp and a small glass of water. An old armoire, painted pale blue and slightly chipped, stores clothing with character. The walls are painted a soft dusty rose, a perfect background for art prints and woven decor.
Light pours in from a wide window draped in sheer curtains. There’s nothing dramatic here—just ease. The kind of room you want to curl up in and never leave.
Bathroom – Earthy, Clean, and Gently Lit
The bathroom is small but unforgettable. The floor is tiled in warm terracotta, and the walls are partly painted, partly left raw. A vintage brass mirror hangs above a carved wood vanity, topped with a stone vessel sink.
There’s a potted fern tucked beside the clawfoot tub, and on the ledge are candles, soaps, and a wooden tray holding a book. The shower is framed in glass, with handmade tile lining the walls—each one slightly different, adding to the charm.
Eucalyptus hangs from the showerhead, releasing scent every time the water runs. There’s a softness in the way light moves through this space. It feels quiet. Almost sacred.
Backyard – Nature’s Living Room
Step out the back door and you’re in another world. A gravel path winds through wildflowers, herbs, and raised garden beds. There’s a low, built-in bench around a firepit, with floor cushions in dusty tones laid out beneath string lights that stretch overhead.
A woven hammock is strung between two trees, and a mosaic-tiled bistro table sits near a small herb garden. The back wall is lined with handmade pottery, old shutters, and even a rusted bicycle that’s now used as a plant holder.
It’s whimsical. Quiet. Alive. And perfectly Boho.
A Gentle Invitation
There’s something about Boho homes that lingers with you—long after the tour ends, long after the photos have been saved. It’s not just the textures or colors or layers (though those are lovely, too). It’s the feeling. That quiet warmth. That sense that you don’t have to rush or perfect or perform. You can just be.
Imagine waking up in a sun-washed bedroom where nothing quite matches but everything feels like you. Imagine padding barefoot into a kitchen where tea is brewing, light spills across handmade tiles, and the day unfolds slowly. Imagine a home that reflects who you are—and who you’re becoming—with every woven thread and weathered woodgrain.
I wonder… if you could bring a little more Boho into your space, where would you begin? What corner of your home is whispering for more soul, more softness, more story?
I’d love to hear what speaks to you. Let’s dream it up, one room at a time.
